About Certified Deconstruction Contractor Training

In October and November 2022, the Office of Historic Preservation hosted Certified Deconstruction Contractor Training to upskill local contractors seeking to offer deconstruction services to the greater San Antonio region. Over three weeks, four cohorts of both existing contractors and individuals with non-construction backgrounds deconstructed multiple wood-framed houses constructed circa 1918.

Our deconstruction trainer was Re:Purpose Savannah, a women+ led 501(c)3 nonprofit that deconstructs historic buildings at the end of their lifecycle, systematically taking structures apart by hand to preserve as much material as possible. Nearly 40 local contractors and an advanced architecture studio from UTSA participated in the training.

Training Recap Video

To highlight the training program, a short video featuring trainee testimonials and live deconstruction footage was created. The video serves as both a training summary and as an advertisement for future cohorts.
